Water Flow Rate

The flow rate of fluids is the volume of fluids that passes through an area in a unit of time. It is measured in m³/s, GPM, or l/s and is directly proportional to the circular pipe flow velocity and the pipe inside diameter.

Pipe Internal Diameter

There is an inverse relationship between the internal diameter of a pipe and the pipe velocity. This means that the water velocity will expand as the pipe diameter reduces.

As the calculation can be measured in terms of feet/s and meter/s, there are two different calculation methods to establish pipe velocity:

Imperial Equation

Determine the following formula, which can be used to calculate the pipe velocity:

V = 0.408 Q/D2

Components

• = Water velocity inside the pipe (feet/s)
• = Water flow rate inside the pipe (GPM)
• = Water flow rate inside the pipe (pipe inside diameter) (inches)

Metric Equation

Determine the following formula, which can be used to calculate the pipe velocity:

V = 1.274 Q/D2

Components

• = Water velocity inside the pipe (m/s)
• = Water flow rate inside the pipe (m³/s)
• = Water flow rate inside the pipe (pipe inside diameter) (m)
